Big data and bias

Great article at Quartz today talking about new company called Evolv that is using big-data to identify hiring biases that tend to plague companies–

I have strong suspicions (and empirical evidence, in some cases), that HR managers have strong (possibly sub-conscious) biases against many large subsets of the applicant population–minorities, women, long-term unemployed, ex-convicts, etc. Evolv leverages big-data that demonstrates that many potential applicants in these sub-sets of the applicant population will be as effective (or more effective) than applicants that would have typically gotten more attention from hiring managers.

I’m all for any company that provides a way for these groups to gain a more level playing field in access to high-quality jobs, and, in doing so, overcome some of the structural barriers to equality of opportunity and income inequality that we have in our country.
